Education Is the Great Equalizer

I’m not going to take much of your time today, but in teaching and speaking to some different groups recently, I’ve come to realize something.

Education is an equalizer.

I know I harp on education so much, but the more see how people respond to knowledge the more I realize just how much a lack of knowledge disadvantages people. This is true about any subject, but perhaps most obvious on the subject of government and the Constitution.

The more this citizens of this country embrace Constitutional and political apathy, the more they choose to disadvantage themselves and the country at large in the face of politicians and experts who can use this naivety to their advantage. It’s unfortunate and cruel but it’s also true.

I gave one example to one of my new students yesterday about how knowledge is power. In the same way that a patient is at the mercy of a doctor when it comes to some matter of health that the patient knows nothing about, citizens are at the mercy of politicians, bureaucratic agencies, the media, and big business when it comes to all things government and politics. We are not equal in power because we are not equal in knowledge. The entities are liberated to use and abuse us the less we know and understand what they’re doing and the methods by which we could confine them.

The irony of course it that the citizenry at large is far more influential and powerful than all of these government/business/media officials put together–and they know this. Thus, keeping the citizenry divided, polarized, and lacking in any clear understanding or knowledge of the government–and the Constitution that exists to keep that government in check and limited— allows for the few who have knowledge to manipulate and dominate the many who do not.

Just imagine what could happen should the whole country suddenly understand key concepts like arbitrary power, the Constitution, limited government, what government can and cannot do, and so much more? Imagine how it would fundamentally change the way those in government would have to behave?

Knowledge is the equalizer. It evens the playing field. It allows for citizens to see clearly what their representatives and others in government are doing and not doing according to a standard other than the citizen’s own opinion.

The less we know and understand the limitations on government power, the less those in power feel the need to know, understand or stay within those limitations.

So, my friends, don’t ever downplay the power of knowledge and real education. I know there’re are many other ways to change the world, save America and preserve liberty — but none of those other ways will be worth anything if they are not first grounded in and fortified by knowledge–first and foremost of the Constitution.

  2. 1st, again Chris, what a Blessing you are to so many of us!
From the Bible, full of knowledge:
Hosea 4:6 ESV [ALL ESV, I prefer the New American Standard Version, NASV],
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge;…
Proverbs 24:5 A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might,…
Proverbs 18:15 An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
Proverbs 12:1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
    Proverbs 2:10 For wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
Proverbs 15:14 The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly.
Proverbs 24:14 Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
Psalm 19:2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
Proverbs 1:5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,…
Of course, there many more. I’m sure you also find it very frustrating & difficult to try to communicate with those with no common sense or any desire to “educate” themselves and remain in their chosen ignorance & slavery.
